The 5th Annual All-Ukrainian Children’s Folklore Festival “Oreli” and the Great Folk Fair dedicated to Saint Nicholas Day will be held from 15th to 19th December, 2012 in the National Center of Folk Culture – Ivan Honchar Museum (Kyiv).

A festive spirit and family coziness await you at the best winter festival for children at the Ivan Honchar Museum. For five years the All-Ukrainian Folklore Festival “ORELI” (A Swing) has been gathering original treasures of traditional culture in authentic displays for children. Songs, winter rituals and games originating from Sloboda Ukraine, Kyiv region, Chernihiv region, Rivne Polissya and Podillya have been prepared by children for the Oreli Festival. Unique winter clothes will be modeled by the participants of folklore groups from different regions of Ukraine.

The festival “Oreli” is a fairy space where the past and present meet. This year for the first time the best Ukrainian music groups “TaRuTa” and “DrymbaDaDzyga” invite children to take part in creative inventions and singing improvisations. Writers, poets and publishers invite children to enjoy interesting entertainment, readings and listening workshops. The highly creative Lirnyk Sashko will tell a whole bunch of winter tales, show a chain of funny cartoons, and create many other fancies.

Plus you and your kids will be pleasantly surprised by the Great Folk Fair with more than 70 folk artisans from different regions of Ukraine. You will find unique handmade gifts and souvenirs for Saint Nicholas Day and Christmas, exquisite art works, and children’s books from Ukrainian publishers. There is a wide choice of toys for kids made of natural materials – wood, straw, clay, fabric, maize, flax and paper. Christmas is coming, so ceramic plates and dishes and other decorative wares from folk artisans will help you to dress a festive table and home. And if you want to make a handmade gift or ornament yourself, then take one of the dozen free master classes in the Saint Nicholas workshop during the Festival days.

In addition to folk artisans selling their wares and teaching how to make items by hand, for the first time this year, they also will cook festive Ukrainian traditional dishes. Visitors to the fair will have a chance to learn for secret recipes and join in the cooking process. And afterwards everyone present will be generously treated to this traditional Ukrainian cuisine.
